Adelaide and Lester -- 'A&L'
The aliveness of undergrowth, plodding at its own tempo, marginal, excellent. The kernel of these songs are straightforward but each is packaged in considered swathes of textures – plucky modulated guitars, the odd dungeon synth, a rogue glockenspiel, fuck it some slide guitar. Far too much dissonance and unadornedness to lump it in with the indie stuff. A&L is more of that e4444e build, the cosmic-folkie trapped inside torrented DAW and orbiting a make-your-own-fun place like Canberra. I associate a song like ‘With The Trees’ with the similar wavelength that some of Mouseatouille’s more demure material occupies in my head – perhaps indicative of some fifth wave emo thing or whatever. Not enough time spent on the internet to be certain. Doesn’t really matter anyhow. This is more pensive and noodle-y, little extra guitar scrapes and specks of dust on microphone filter finding their own important place in the mix. Iggy (of Freight fame) has elided consensus and made a great album, slowly building layers and asymmetries into a weird and expansive bedroom horizon.
