Negative Gears -- 'Moraliser'
‘Moraliser’ is a poignant release for the times, sincerely down on itself, revelling in the contradictions and apathy of urban living, you’re asking me for a light, showing off ya biceps as the car breaks down and everyone snickers driving by. The lyrics across this album jump out at ya – pointed, funny, liable to really meaning-make long after first listen. Behind them, the songs are robust and considered explorations of what feels like a distinctly Sydney sound, modulated sermons where everyone leans on the same table and nothing’s to be discovered only sorted out. Lots o punk and post-punk are quick to lecture with their synths and shallow politics but despite its namesake, ‘Moraliser’ rarely feels like it’s talking down, your struggle is shared after all.
