Cover for Yirinda - 'S/T'

Yirinda is the duo of Fred Leone and Samuel Pankhurst. Chapter Music says of the personnel: “Fred is one of three Butchulla songmen - a song and language custodian for the Butchulla people from the Fraser Coast region of Queensland, including K’gari (formerly known as Fraser Island). He sings the songs on this album in the endangered Butchulla language, now spoken by only a handful of people. Samuel is an internationally acclaimed contrabassist / producer known for his kaleidoscopic harmonies and polyrhythmic mastery”. The two come together to make an experimental folk album that feels as cosmic as it does intimate, Fred’s confident voice switching between spoken-word and upper-register melodies, bolstered by a suite of synths, strings, auxiliary percussion, yidaki and horns. Beguiling dissonance and an unadorned-ness textures the record in a way that makes it visceral, feeling like a natural outpour of place as much it does song.
